In June 2023, Hong Kong’s once-thriving press freedom was further curtailed, as the city’s media landscape underwent a dramatic transformation following the imposition of the National Security Law.
Hong Kong-based news outlets such as Apple Daily and Stand News were forced to shut down, while journalists faced arrests and intimidation.
The Hong Kong Journalists Association reported that press freedom had been significantly eroded, with more than 50% of journalists reporting self-censorship in their reporting.
The erosion of press freedom in Hong Kong drew widespread condemnation from international human rights organizations, such as Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International, who labeled the situation as a “death knell” for journalism in the region.
